Space News: SAN FRANCISCO – Early next year, NASA plans to select a maximum of three Astrophysics Pioneers missions, investigations with a maximum price tag of $20 million, Michel Garcia, NASA Astrophysics Division smallsats lead program scientist, said at the virtual American Geophysical Union fall meeting. NASA created the Astrophysics Pioneers initiative “to do compelling astrophysics science in smaller form factors and at lower costs than traditional Explorers,” Garcia said at a NASA Astrophysics Advisory Committee meeting in March. Pioneers supports investigations that would exceed the $10 million cost cap for the Astrophysics Research and Analysis program element of Research and Opportunities in Space grant program. Pioneers missions can fly on cubesats larger than six units, cubesat constellations, small satellites, the International Space Station or balloons that remain in the atmosphere for a month or more. The $20 million cost cap for Pioneers missions does not include launch costs. Principal investigators proposed 24 Pioneers missions in October to house advanced coronagraphs, ultra-stable clocks, polarimeters and radio interferometers. The proposed missions are destined for various orbits including Lagrange Point 2 and cis-lunar space. As such, their presence and behaviour often conflict with the desires of the human residents. Fouling, noise, aggression and health concerns are all cited as reasons that there are “too many”. Lethal control is often used for population management; however, this raises questions about whether this is a sustainable strategy to resolve the conflict between humans and geese when, paradoxically, it is humans that are responsible for creating the habitat and often providing the food and protection of geese at other times. We hypothesise that the landscaping of suburban parks can be improved to decrease its attractiveness to geese and to reduce the opportunity for conflict between geese and humans.

These artifacts mostly assist the development team in agile projects where sets of them express the expected features of the to-be software. Nevertheless, when faced with large user stories’ sets, further structuring needs to be introduced to make the software problem more understandable/clear. Indeed, the latter can hardly be understood on the basis of huge flat lists of sentences. The present paper describes the premises of an experiment destined to evaluate whether novice modelers can understand the requirements problem better through a visual representation (called Rationale Tree) built out of a user stories’ set. It does so by comparing, on the same objective, the Rationale Tree method to the industry-adopted User Story Mapping technique with a modeling exercise. This was performed with the participation of two student groups where one used the former technique while the other one employed the latter. The ultimate goal of this exercise is to identify the actual performance of the Rational Tree in delivering understandability to the requirements problem (when input is provided in the form of a complex user stories’ set) in order to identify possible bottlenecks and improvement opportunities within the method itself.

Currently, the elite is seen as the leader of the economy and the main driver of change but the role of artisans deserves to be reassessed, particularly through its material remains. Pyrotechnologies that have left few written traces, have long been neglected. Until Henning's work , there was no systematic analysis of the archaeological sources. Little attention is still paid to where artisans obtained their resources, the techniques they used, to their networks and to the social and physical landscapes in which they operated. During the early Middle Ages, ceramics, glass and iron also underwent profound transformations. The production places moved from the agglomerations and rural settlements to the aristocratic domains, monasteries and emporia. At the same time, major technical changes took place that fundamentally altered the modus operandi of these crafts. The factors involved in these transformations are still largely unknown. Crossed-craft interactions and artisan networks could very well have been key triggers of innovation. We propose to approach these crafts and their interactions using their respective “chaînes opératoires”, identifying potential opportunities for cooperation, sharing of resources and innovation. These models will then be combined with the locations of raw materials and those of the secondary workshops discovered in Belgium, the heart of the Merovingian and Carolingian Empire.

The effect of these uncertainties on objectives can be positive (opportunity risk) or/and negative (hazard risk). With every decision made by people within a company, risks are created, modified, updated or deleted. Therefore, the way these decisions are made in terms of change management strategy as well as the information they are based on, influence how objectives are achieved and requirements fulfilled. Despite the importance of risk definition and risk taking at all organizational levels, organizations mostly consider risk at the management and operational levels. Risks nevertheless also need to be considered at the strategic (governance) level because they constitute what hampers an organization to achieve its strategy. This paper focuses on risk at the strategic level and for this purpose it enriches the Model Driven IT Governance (MoDrIGo) framework; the enriched framework allows to evaluate the alignment of business IT services with strategic objectives while balancing this alignment/support with the potential risk at governance level. All in all, the framework is applicable in broader governance scenarios. The relevance of MoDrIGo as starting point to build a risk-aware governance framework (compared to other similar methods) is mainly because of its service-orientation and its focus on software development issues. The enhanced framework thus provides a high-level risk overview that helps organizations to successfully perceive, detect and treat risks when pursuing their objectives.
